Hi and welcome! I’m so glad you’re here. I know there’s an abundance of stuff to read online (and too many emails) so it means a lot that you want to spend time with my words.
1. Purpose
I’m launching this Substack because I have a lot of thoughts about diet culture, eating disorders, anti-fat bias, and body image, especially the lack of accessibility for healing and holistic recovery and representation in media. As a freelance writer, I pitch about once a week, and with editors passing on topics I’m really passionate about, I wanted to have my voice heard.
The name of this newsletter, Such a Pretty Face, comes from years of being told this— that I had such a pretty face and if only I lost some weight… I got tired of feeling like my body was separate from myself and something to be fixed.
2. Community Guidelines
Comments are welcome and encouraged! This online community strives to be safe and all-inclusive. Please refrain from anti-fat bias comments, or any other form of bigotry or hate or mean-spirited comments. If something is on here that is inaccurate or harmful, please let me know so I can address it. I write from lived experiences and research, but we’re all learning here. I do my best to keep things heart-centered and truthful. Thanks!
3. Frequency
You can expect a new post 2 times a month— op-eds, lists, personal essays. My aim is the 1st and 21st of each month. I’ll also eventually be migrating my work from other platforms.
4. Money
For now, this Substack is free! Yay! It’s so wonderful to be supported by subscribers and I appreciate any readers willing to spend time with my work. But the writing life (and other art practices) is wildly unpredictable and unstable. It takes me anywhere from 3-12+ hours to brainstorm ideas, write, research, edit, refine and post each piece. Any support is most gratefully received. Annual membership is currently $60/year, or $5 a month. Founding members are welcome to fund more. Thank you!
